All About Me

As someone who loves to write, describing myself is surprising something that comes difficult to me. My name is Isabel Reyes and I am in 10th grade attending Fort Lauderdale High School. Academic wise, I would say I am a responsible student who gets good grades and strives for success. I've always been pretty well-rounded, so I've struggled on deciding what exactly I wanted to do as a career. I guess you could say that makes me a typical nerd, someone who loves to read and learn new things. Funny enough, it wasn't until I finished watching "How to Get Away With Murder," my favorite TV Show, where I decided that I wanted to become an attorney in the future. In school, although I get good grades, I do not particularly enjoy STEM related subjects and tend to lean towards the humanities. My parents have always pushed me into trying different extracurriculars of all kinds, however, I struggled to find someone that sparked my interest. I’ve always been introverted and quiet, so I wanted to participate in something that would break my shell. I joined my school's debate team and Spanish Honor Society, but in addition to that, I ended up signing up for salsa classes. As a girl who is growing up in a Spanish household, I am very exposed to my heritage. Although I am proud of my fascinating Hispanic ancestry, I have unfortunately experienced the discrimination that comes from being a minority. My family loves to play salsa music; whether it be at dinner, while cleaning the house, or while cooking, we almost always had salsa playing in our house. I liked the expression that comes with dancing and the connection it had to my culture. Through salsa, I’ve met so many new people and made years long friendships as well. After about 6 months of taking classes, I auditioned and joined a salsa team. Joining the team taught me discipline, commitment, and what it was like to push my limits. Performing at venues and competing also gave me confidence in myself and helped me push through my stage fright, which came useful in school. I’ve been on the team for about 3 years now and I am so grateful I gave it a chance. The key to my success thus far has been my persistence and curiosity, and I am confident that these traits will serve me well in the future.
