Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

Hi everyone! Welcome to the beginning of my research. I’ve watched both the short film 9 and the full film 9 and here are my thoughts.

 Short Film:

Honestly, that was one of the creepiest films I’ve seen in a long time. There was non talking. The setting was lifeless and looked as if this animated world had been abandoned. The plot started with these two doll like figures with numbers on their back (5 and 9). They come across this mechanic monster, it was designed like a mixture of a lion and a dog but completely made of metal. It has bright green eyes and a vicious roar. This monster abducts 5 and uses a green portal device to kill him. He begins to embolden his character. The other character number nine was extremely afraid and ran away to go hide. Eventually we see number nine find these pieces of junk that he puts together and makes a torch however, with a lightbulb number nine lures the monster into a abandoned cave like setting, where number nine becomes trapped on a large wooden plank, just as things seemed to be impossible number nine managed to swing off the plank and find safe ground and drop the monster off the plank onto the ground. He noticed, however, that the green light that he had was still glowing. Number nine decided to put these two green icees together and these glowing, ghostlike, doll figure began to emerge out the light.

The animation in the film was a bit choppy. But we do need to take into account that it was made more than 10 years ago. Technology has improved dramatically over time.

Full film: When 9 springs to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are sentient rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, 9 convinces comrades that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding, go on the offensive, and find out why the machines want to destroy them. As 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure. Again, it was a dark film. The setting was very gloomy. However, this time the plot goes into more detail. We see a gradual change in character a he becomes more confident and driven. Though they are both similar this movie has more action than the last and gives the character more energy to him. Although words aren’t exchanged the director was able to convey such a strong and brave emotion through the screen.

Comparison - The full length film gave 9 more characteristics in terms of his personality than the short film was able to do. This is because the director had more time to carry out a more detailed and elaborate plot. I enjoyed the short film better however, because it was more cut dry and to the point which is what I enjoy more personally. Both used gloomy, post apocalyptic times which conveyed a sense of hopelessness at the beginning of both films. But this set a foundation for a heroic storyline that followed forward.
